Dry ice is extremely cold and releases carbon dioxide gas as it sublimates. Use it only with proper handling and ventilation.
Direct skin contact can cause severe frostbite in seconds. Never handle pellets with bare hands.
Keep fresh air moving in enclosed vehicles and never leave dry ice in an occupied sealed space.
Carbon dioxide gas must be able to escape as the dry ice sublimates, or pressure can build dangerously.
Keep dry ice away from children and pets, and use it only for its intended purpose.

A good planning range is about 5–10 lbs of dry ice per 24 hours in a well-insulated cooler. Fill the cooler as fully as possible, limit how often it's opened, and keep it out of the sun to make your dry ice last longer. Try the estimator on our site for a starting recommendation, or call us to talk through your job.
Dry ice doesn't melt. It sublimates straight from a solid into carbon dioxide gas. In a quality cooler, expect to lose roughly 5–10 lbs per day. Higher temperatures, thin insulation, empty air space and frequent opening all speed that up.
Put warm or hot water in a sturdy, open container, then add dry ice pellets with gloves or tongs. Thick, low-lying fog rolls out immediately. As the water cools, the fog thins, so swap in fresh warm water to keep it going. Use fog in ventilated areas only, and keep children and pets from leaning into or lying in it.
Yes. That dense, floor-hugging cloud effect is made with dry ice and a dry ice fog machine, which you can rent from event or DJ companies. Pick up your dry ice the day of, or Friday for a weekend wedding. Confirm with your venue and fog-machine provider how many lbs they need for your event.
We don't recommend putting dry ice directly into drinks people will consume. Swallowing a pellet can cause serious internal injury. For a smoking punch bowl, place dry ice and warm water in a separate container nested beneath or beside the serving bowl, so the dry ice never touches anything people drink.
Yes, both are among the most common uses.
Dry ice is about -109°F (-78.5°C) and can cause frostbite-like burns in seconds.
Store dry ice in a ventilated, insulated cooler in a well-ventilated area, away from children and pets. Don't put it in your home freezer, because it can trip the thermostat or damage the appliance. Never use an airtight container. To dispose of it, let it sublimate in an open, well-ventilated space, ideally outdoors. Never put it in a sink, toilet, drain or trash can.
